Java is integral to our solution

Our company has started going down a similar road for some of the same reasons. Like many companies, we're running a mix of mainframe, Unix/Linux, and Windows platforms. And, like many companies, we wanted to make the best use of these platforms in the short term and have the flexibility to move to different hardware platforms as the need arises. Java is an integral part of our solution.
Utilizing Java, we're able to deploy applications across the enterprise from our mainframe to handheld devices. We started by building our B2B (I hate that term) sites using a combination of JSP, Servlets, and Beans running under Tomcat on Windows 2000 servers. From there we've begun moving into the back office developing Java applications to communicate to the conveyor systems in our distribution center. We're also using a combination of Linux, Unix System Services on OS/390, Java RMI, DB/2, and Microsoft SQL Server to replace legacy Cobol/CICS applications and proprietary protocols with TCP/IP and open source. We're currently reviewing the viability of open source databases.
Open source tools are helping us to increase the effectiveness of our current systems and applications, while at the same time helping us contain costs.
