In response to "Can justice cope with technology?" reader David Morris writes: |
A monopoly cannot exist without the government and in the case of Microsoft, there has never been a shred of protection or favoritism, unlike Enron and the Clinton administration. Throughout this circus show, many have stated that there is no real tangible monopoly--and the marketplace has proven them correct. Consumers, who where never injured by the fact that Microsoft gave away its browser (as did Netscape), are already seeing new technologies that will surpass PC capabilities. And now Walmart, the nation's largest discount chain, will be selling PCs without any OS. This case was never undertaken for the good of the people. Firms that could not compete in the marketplace took this action. These firms then involved a bunch of bumbling techno neophytes (lawyers and Congress) through a massive lobbying effort. There can be no good from this effort.
