As companies add more enterprise application capability to PDAs (one to two years), they will focus on providing applications in several client formats. Thin client will be appropriate for those users not needing localized data storage, and those with the ability to get a connection on a full-time basis when needed. This is appropriate for extending portals in a real-time mode (with optimized content for the PDA form factor). Indeed, many users will obtain connectivity via thin clients over a virtual private network (VPN) dialup connection for e-mail, applications, and so on.

However, many users will be unable to maintain a full-time connection and instead will require a thick client, which will download and store the user application/data on the device and synchronize with a server when placed into a docking station, through a dial-up connection. For those users who will be moving to pervasive wireless technology, smart clients will be required. This enables a portion of the application to run on the device when the wireless connection is unavailable, so the user can continue working and storing all interactions, then forwarding the data the next time a connection is established.

Support and quality-of-service levels should be defined based on classes of users and the criticality of their function. This should become part of a defined PDA policy, and users should be made aware of this at the outset. Furthermore, support costs should be allocated to various classes of users based on their priority and expected response time. META Group believes mission-critical users should have support at least equal to the support granted to internal PC users.

How does your company plan to support numerous PDAs in the future? E-mail us, or talk back below and let us know.
